Yuichi Yokoyama
Born in Miyazaki, 1967. Lives and works in Kanagawa.
Yuichi Yokoyama had produced Fine Art works in 1990’s after he finished his B.F.A at Musashino Art University with a major in oil painting. Since 2000, Yokoyama shifted his practice to Manga as a medium that allowed him to “draw time.” Famously known as “Neo-Manga”, his works involve no specific story development, but rather, they depart from standard Manga and express a pure flow of time depicting multiple characters with unfriendly and obscure actions, movements and transformation of mysterious objects. His representative comics,New Engineering, Travel, NIWA, Baby Boom, The Room of the World Map were translated into various languages and earned a high reputation in the world. Other published work is BABY BOOM FINAL in which the artist reproduced his monochrome Manga images in neon colors.
While a large-scale solo exhibition, “Yuichi Yokoyama – I am depicting time: Complete Records of Neo Manga” at Kawasaki City Museum, Kanagawa, Japan (2010) marks Yokoyama’s success as an established artist in Japan, the artist has won an international reputation. He worked with HERMÈS for their window display of Isetan Shinjuku Store, Tokyo in 2013. He also had participated in numerous group exhibitions “Logical Emotion”, Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich, Switzerland (2014) / Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow (MOCAK), Krakow, Poland (2015) / Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale), Land Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany (2015). In 2018, he exhibited his series “Beasts and Ourselves”and turned them into stained glasses in “Palais de Tokyo”, Paris, France. He also had several solo exhibitions such as “YÛICHI YOKOYAMA: WANDERING THROUGH MAPS, UN VOYAGE À TRAVERS LES CARTES”, Pavillon Blanc, Colomiers, France (2014); “YOKOYAMA Yuichi x Surrealism”, Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum, Japan (2014) and “this is that, touch it.”, Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, Japan (2014).
