Jeffrey Immelt

Jeffrey R. Immelt (born February 19, 1956) is an American business executive who is the current chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of General Electric (GE).

Early Life and Education

Immelt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Donna Rosemary Immelt, a schoolteacher, and Joseph Francis Immelt, an executive at GE. He earned a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from Dartmouth College, where he played football and was president of the Phi Delta Alpha fraternity. He later received an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Career at GE

Immelt joined GE in 1982 and has served in various leadership roles. He was appointed president and CEO of GE Medical Systems in 1997. In 2001, he succeeded Jack Welch as CEO of GE.

As CEO, Immelt has overseen GE's operations during a period of significant economic and technological changes. He has implemented several strategic initiatives, including a focus on global growth, innovation, and operational efficiency.

Board and Philanthropic Activities

Immelt is a member of the boards of directors of two non-profit organizations: The Robin Hood Foundation and The Business Council. He was chairman of The Business Council in 2005 and 2006.

Compensation and Recognition

Immelt received total compensation of $14,209,267 in 2007, including a base salary of $3,300,000, a bonus of $5,800,000, and stock awards of $4,713,000. In 2008, his compensation was $5,717,469, including a salary of $3,300,000, stock awards of $2,044,650, and other compensation of $372,819. Immelt declined his bonus for 2008. His compensation was $5,487,155 in 2009, again without a bonus, and $15,200,000 in 2010.

Immelt was ranked sixth among U.S. conglomerate leaders in compensation over five years, receiving $53,820,000. He was named one of TIME magazine's 100 most influential people in the world in 2009.

Immelt has delivered commencement speeches and received honorary doctorates from Dartmouth College, Northeastern University, Pepperdine University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Notre Dame, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Michigan State University, and the University of Connecticut.

Presidential Advisory Council

In February 2009, Immelt was appointed to President Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board. Obama said of Immelt's role on the board: "He's somebody who's going to be giving me his best, unvarnished advice throughout this process." The appointment was announced on January 21, 2011, while Immelt retained his position at GE.
