Jarrett wins but pays the price
Last Friday night's women's long jump final ended in disaster for Jovanee Jarrett, who despite winning the event, had to pay a heavy price as she suffered a dislocated shoulder on her fifth attempt.
Jarrett, the highest-ranked Jamaican with a season's best of 6.45m - which matches the 'B' qualifying standard for the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Athletics, landed awkwardly and had to end her participation in the event.
She had, however, already posted a distance of 6.44m on her first attempt, which was enough to hand her victory in the event ahead of Francine Simpson, 6.23m, and Chanice Porter, 6.20m.
Jarrett, who works out in the same camp as world and Olympic 200m silver medallist Kerron Stewart under the watchful eyes of Henry Rolle, described the experience as a horrific one but is expecting to be back in top shape before the World Championships.
"It was a horrific experience, it was horrible, I can't even explain how horrible it was in words but I was really scared. The doctors did what they had to do and thankfully I'm feeling much better now," said Jarrett a couple hours after the crash landing.
"On my fifth jump, which I thought was one of my better jumps, I landed badly, I was in a lot of pain and when I looked, my shoulder was slipped out and I had to end my competition. I was very scared," Jarrett exclaimed with her hand cuffed in an arm sling.
"I must say the conditions weren't that good, but I did what I could do and finished first so I'm thankful for that, even if it came at a price," Jarrett added.
The 28-year-old is certainly not harbouring any psychological scars from the incident and is already looking forward to competing at the World Championships in Daegu, where she is hoping to at least secure a berth in the final.
"I'm not too worried about it actually, the doctors say I'll feel some pain over the next couple of weeks but it's nothing to end my season or anything like that so hopefully I'll be able to bounce back," Jarrett said.
